Design & Engagement

Academic Lead: Danaë Stanton Fraser

Engaging diverse publics with questions and considerations of data protection, privacy and online harm is challenging. Users are often overwhelmed by the expected level of knowledge required to make informed decisions. This strand utilises creative and design-led approaches to co-design with citizens (through a standing panel, in-the-wild studies, Citizens Data Agency) approaches / tools to make sense of complex data ecosystems and take control of their own data in tangible, playful and provocative ways.

Adoption & Adoptability

Academic Lead: Bettina Nissen

A number of factors influence the adoption of new technologies by different consumer groups, including perceptions of benefits and risks, ease of use, attitudes and social norms, and the influence of mass media. Through ethnographies, workshops, action research, and participatory design, this strand seeks to understand potential drivers and barriers to adoption of PETs and online harm reduction interventions at both the organisation and citizen level – feeding requirements into projects and bringing their results to stakeholders’ attention.

Responsible, Inclusive & Ethical Innovation

Academic Lead: Richard Owen

This strand reflects the importance of collective stewardship to encourage cultures of accountability and responsibility. It works to embed Responsible Innovation practices across all projects, i.e., anticipating potential impacts of new technologies through upstream participatory public engagement and foresight activities; reflexivity in being open to one’s assumptions and limitations of current knowledge; inclusion of a range of diverse voices; and being responsive to changing directions, values, and circumstances within society.
